Reforming Maine's bycatch lobster landings law is the most important step our state government can take to help Maine fishermen keep fishing from Maine ports.

Supporters include a varied mix of groundfishermen, workers in the seafood business, businesses, politicians, and - most of all - engaged citizens interested in maintaining our diverse waterfront economy.  Even a number of lobstermen have leant their quiet support.

We believe Maine, like other states, can support a variety of fisheries.  We support the existing limits on lobster harvesting - including bycatch limits - and believe the healthy status of the resource demonstrates their effectiveness.

We believe the trap fishery rightly should harvest most lobsters, but that no one should be forced to discard the relatively few that are incidentally netted by groundfish vessels.
