This site is maintained by the Portland Fish Exchange.  The Exchange supports amending Maine's bycatch lobster law as one part of an effort to save Maine's traditional groundfish communities.

Groundfish landings in Maine have fallen to a record low level, and are no longer sufficient to provide Maine's seafood processors  with adequate supply.  Fuel and ice suppliers, repair shops, and other businesses are failing as more and more of our fleet departs Maine for other New England states.

Groundfishermen have harvested off the Maine coast since the 17th century.  Reforming Maine's lobster law is one part of maintaining our state's working waterfront tradition.

The Portland Fish Exchange is the nation’s only publicly owned non-profit seafood auction.  The Exchange is charged with providing a fair, open and transparent marketplace for buyers and sellers of wholesale seafood, and promoting a sustainable seafood industry in New England.  Approximately 90% of Maine’s groundfish catch is sold on the Exchange.
