I am writing to support amending Maine's lobster landing regulations to be in accordance with federal law. I am a citizen with no vested interest in the seafood industry, but I fully support amending Maine’s bycatch lobster laws. The practice of not allowing Maine’s fishermen to land bycatch lobsters locally affects all Maine business and residents.

Fishing vessels are an important part of Maine’s culture and economy. They contribute tax revenue and provide jobs both at sea and on shore.  They are an important part of Maine's seafaring heritage, contributing to the fabric of Maine life and promoting tourism.

Amending the law is good business and common sense. Harvesting, landing, and selling groundfish and lobster locally supports all business in Maine. Amending the lobster law would bring back much needed vitality to Maine’s economy, and keep local fishermen close to home.  A diverse waterfront economy - supporting fishing, tourism, cargo, and other balanced uses - is fundamental to Maine's history and values.  Amending Maine's bycatch lobster landing laws will help maintain that diversity by supporting Maine's groundfish communities.
