Gloucester's 124.1 million pounds of fish and shellfish landed in 2005 is the highest in a generation, according to the National Marine Fishery Service. The highest total in recent memory was 180.5 million pounds in 1984. Landings here shrunk to a low of 43.2 million pounds in 2000 and have steadily increased since then.

The city reached a high ranking of ninth in 2002 with 78.5 million pounds landed for a value of $41.2 million. But Gloucester fell to 13th in 2003 - landing 88.8 million pounds valued at $37.8 million - before inching back to 11. The lowest it ranked in the last 10 years was 39th in 1996.

Portland, on the other hand, has been shrinking since its recent high of 86.6 million pounds in 2001 to 56.8 million pounds in 2005.

New Bedford, nearly double the value of the second-largest port, Dutch Harbor in Unalaska, Alaska, had 153.4 million pounds of seafood valued at $282.5 million. The next most valuable New England port is Gloucester.

Calomo said he backs a proposal to allow Maine draggers to land their lobster bycatch in Maine because it would help the groundfishermen along the Maine coast. But, confirming that a number of Maine vessels land lobsters and groundfish here, he said he expects them to keep coming to Gloucester.
